In the aluminum segment, Votorantim Metais stands out for its strong performance in the local market, in the civil construction, electricity, packaging, consumption goods and transport sectors. Its factory in Alumínio (SP) is considered the largest plant in the world to operate completely vertically manner – it makes, in the same venue, the bauxite processing and the manufacturing of casting and processed products such as ingots, dowels, rebars, coil plates, plates, sheets, profiles, tiles and cables.
In the nickel business, VM began its activities in 1981 in Niquelândia (GO) and São Miguel Paulista (SP), with a production capacity of about 5 thousand tons per year. Currently, the figure is 25 thousand tons per year, showing VM’s growth and consolidation in the production of the most diverse forms of this metal.
On the other hand, in the zinc market, Votorantim Metais’s history started in 1956, with the creation of Companhia Mineira de Metais (CMM) in Três Marias (MG), and today it has a production capacity of 730 tons per year. Since 2004 the company has owned a refinery in Cajamarquilla, in Peru, whose production capacity is 320 thousand tons. Recently, Votorantim Metais has taken control of Milpo, one of the most competitive operations in the mining sector in the world, expanding the company portfolio with the inclusion of copper, lead and silver. In the United States, in November 2007 it acquired U.S. Zinc with operations in the United States and China, with a capacity to produce approximately 100 thousand tons of zinc.
In order to identify opportunities, Votorantim Metais’ Mineral Exploration area is decisive due to the fact that it discovers new mineral deposits and makes them feasible. Since 2006, the company has had a specific management in the corporate area and operates with a multidisciplinary team in the geology and mining engineering areas, among other professionals. VM works in Mining Exploration in six countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia and Peru, with 68 projects developed for aluminum, nickel and zinc.
