The Cajamarquilla Unit started making Indian on December 16, at 11:30 a.m. This achievement, being commemorated by the VM teams of Brazil and Peru, is the result of the knowledge, dedication and work of the two teams, responsible for the technology developed in the process.
A byproduct of the zinc production process, Indian has a high market value – around US$ 400 the kilo (US$ 180 the pound). It is used especially by the high tech industry as a see-through conductor electrode on Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) for TV and PC screens.
The initial production volume is expected to reach 38 tons a year. This amount is expected to reach 76 tons/year when the expansion project of the Cajamarquilla Unit, which will raise the zinc production capacity to 320,000 tons a year, is concluded.
The Indian production was made feasible by replacing the jarosite by the goetite process, which has also led to a higher competitiveness of the Cajamarquilla plant. As the technology is confirmed, the next stages will be the process stability and the metal continuous production.
